EXTREMITY X-RAY
An extremity X-ray is an imaging test that uses small amounts of radiation to produce images of the bones in your limbs (extremities). This includes your:
Fingers and hands
Toes and feet
Wrists and forearms
Elbows and upper arms
Ankles and lower legs
Knees and thighs
How it Works
The process is similar to other X-rays. You'll be positioned so the specific extremity is between the X-ray machine and a detector. The machine emits a small dose of radiation that passes through your body. Dense structures like bone block more radiation and appear white on the image, while soft tissues appear in shades of gray.
What it Shows
Extremity X-rays are used to diagnose a variety of conditions, including:
Fractures (broken bones)
Dislocations
Arthritis
Infections
Bone tumors
Foreign objects
The Procedure
The procedure is usually quick and straightforward:
Preparation: You may be asked to remove jewelry or clothing that could interfere with the images.
Positioning: The technician will position your extremity for the X-ray.
Imaging: The technician will take images from different angles to provide a complete view.
Duration: The entire procedure usually takes only a few minutes.
