ARTERIAL BLOOD GAS (ABG)
This is for informational purposes only. For medical advice or diagnosis, consult a professional.
An Arterial Blood Gas (ABG) test measures the levels of oxygen and carbon dioxide in your blood, as well as the pH (acidity) of your blood. Unlike most blood tests that use blood from a vein, an ABG test uses blood taken from an artery, usually in the wrist (radial artery).
Why is an ABG test done?
Assess lung function: To determine how well your lungs are able to move oxygen into the blood and remove carbon dioxide.
Diagnose respiratory conditions: Such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), asthma, and pneumonia.
Monitor the severity of lung disease: To track the progression of a lung condition or the effectiveness of treatment.
Evaluate acid-base balance: To check for imbalances in the body's pH, which can be caused by various medical conditions.
